Breath of Ice
The water in our rain barrel transforms during the winter. A silent black surface erupts into a symphony of jagged and twisting edges. This leaf was caught beneath the surface, and the lines that trace across it the motion of dancing.
Icy Horizon in Red
Another opportunity I saw my rain barrel as the layers of ice separated. I removed this piece and set it in the sun over a bed of drying maple leaves. As the light warps through the melting ice, a thin straight horizon splits the frame. A line is drawn across the edge of two worlds.
My final view of the cold outside world, from our warm holiday one, is this fractured surface of a lake. The surface is scarred and uneven, but a warm light glides across, signalling hope and warmth. The solid appearance is destined to warm and soften like a cold heart when touched to the light.
